For nearly 40 years, Ted Jensen has been one of the world’s most in-demand mastering engineers, putting the finishing touches to projects across virtually every genre of music. He brings a unique combination of technical expertise and creative feel that allows him to constantly re-define the sonic limits of CDs, DVDs, vinyl records and every other relevant format developed during his career.
While still in high school, Ted built his own stereo and recording equipment and began recording local bands both in the studio and at live events. One of the local “bands” was the Yale Symphony Orchestra for which Ted recorded several performances at Woolsey Hall in New Haven. During this time, he met Mark Levinson who was starting a company that built “no compromise” audio equipment. Ted joined him and aided in the design and manufacture some of their early products which helped get Mark Levinson Audio Systems off the ground. Ted left Levinson to begin his mastering career with Sterling Sound in 1976, almost immediately rising to prominence with a string of hits including The Eagles’ Hotel California and Billy Joel’s The Stranger, which began a life-long working relationship with Phil Ramone.
Promoted to Chief Mastering Engineer in 1984, Ted Jensen has spearheaded a number of proprietary developments that have kept Sterling at the forefront of mastering technology. This included working closely with Neve in the mid 80′s in developing the first all-digital mastering console, the DTC-1, and as one of the consultants to Apple for Mastering for iTunes. Ted also designed some of the studio monitors at Sterling, including the ones used by Tom Coyne to master many gold, platinum and Grammy winning albums.
Over the course of his career, Ted has mastered 16 Grammy winners in the categories of Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical as well as a multitude of Grammy winners and nominees in these and other categories. In 2003, Ted won a Grammy Award for the mastering of the 2002 Album of the Year “Come Away With Me” by Norah Jones.
Ted has also been nominated for 16 TEC awards, winning four of them for Outstanding Creative Achievement, and also received numerous highly coveted AMPEX Golden Reel awards.
Other classics mastered by Ted include The Police’s Ghost In the Machine, Madonna’s Madonna, Billy Joel’s 52nd Street, Steve Winwood’s Back in the High Life, Eric Clapton’s Unplugged, Dave Matthews Band’s Under the Table and Dreaming, Talking Heads’ Speaking in Tongues, James Taylor’s Hourglass, Deftones’ Diamond Eyes, Rosanne Cash’s Black Cadillac, the soundtrack for the movie Philadelphia, Pat Metheny’s One Quiet Night, Santana’s Supernatural, Pantera’s Far Beyond Driven and Green Day’s American Idiot.
Ted mastered 2014 Grammy nominees Tim McGraw’s Highway Don’t Care, Muse’s The Second Law, Kings of Leon’s Mechanical Bull, Gary Clark Jr’s Blak And Blu, Alice In Chains’ The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here and more recently, he mastered acclaimed Paul McCartney’s New, Arcade Fire’s Reflektor, Coldplay’s Ghost Stories and Bring Me the Horizon’s Sempiturnal.
